The Holy Spirit called Johane (Shona Dialect) which literally refers to John the Baptist, came down from heaven and filled a man called Shonhiwa Masedza who was born in Makoni area in Zimbabwe. Through the Holy Spirit, they founded an African church for the African people called Johane Masowe Chishanu Apostles in the year 1931 at Gandanzara area in Makoni District. Johane meaning the Holy Spirit, Masowe meaning the holy place of worship, Chishanu (shona Dialect) meaning the sabbath day on a Holy Friday and Apostles meaning a community of apostles who follow Holy Spirit. The holy spirit focused on praying one true God of Abraham and stopping the culture of polygamous marriage fostering keeping of 10 commandments introduced by Moses at Mt Sinai. The Holy Spirit which still lives today, was sent to the African people following the request by Abraham who lived and gratified God, for African tribe to know and pray the true God, instead of praying to ancestors and believed in medium spirits.

The legacy of Baba Emmanuel

The legacy of Emmanuel

Mudyiwa Dzangare a man who was among the disciples of Baba Johane, took over the mission in 1974. His mission was guided by the Holy Spirit Emmanuel, our Lord Jesus Christ. The mission focused on building the church and its governance structures. The 10 commandments were reinforced and formalized, the church doctrine which detailed the lifestyle of a Johane Masowe Apostle was established, which included how the Apostles dress the white garment, what they must not eat, how they worship and how they dress even in their social community.

After establishing these governance structures, the Holy Spirit Emmanuel handed over to third in the mission line Holy Spirit Nyenyedzi. However, the Holy Spirit Johane and Emmanuel still influences the church even today.
